New Automotive Emission Analyzer at CTAG

CTAG has recently acquired an automotive emission analyzer system, model MEXA 7170, that has been installed at the engine test bench. This test bench has been fully automated and equipped for the monitoring and real time recording of all typical engine parameters, and offers the possibility of defining test cycles according to the new European emission standards.

This test bench is equipped with:
1/ Engine dyno: Maximum Power 250 CV – Maximum Torque 350 Nm.
2/ Test bench control Software (with means for defining fully automated cycles).
3/ Data acquisition system installed for monitoring of engine functioning parameters (combustible consumption, air aspiration capacity, pressures, temperatures, strain gauges, accelerometers, cooling capacity, etc.)
4/ Test Room for engines with air renewal and smoke extraction systems.
5/ External engine refrigeration system.
6/ External programmable loggers.
7/ Combustion gas analyzer, model MEXA 7170, with the following characteristics:
o CO Analyzer (carbon monoxide).
o CO2 Analyzer (carbon dioxide).
o Heated THC Analyzer (total hydrocarbons).
o Heated NOx's Analyzer.
o Heated sampling line.
o Calibration gas line.

This equipment is used to provide automotive companies with advanced technological services and, also, to give assistance in research projects. This was the case of a joint project carried out lately by CTAG and the University of Vigo called "Biodiesel characterization and evaluation of its compatibility with engines under controlled test bench conditions".

DESCRIPTION OF THE NEW EQUIPMENT:

Horiba MEXA-7170 D exhaust gas analysis system complies with the requirements embodied in ISO 8178 and 16183 standards applicable to exhaust gas emissions measurement on internal combustion engines for private and industrial applications - off road – on engine test benches. The analysers incorporated meet all the performing principles and further requirements stated in the above mentioned standards as far as Diesel and gas motors GLP and GND are concerned. This equipment is also suitable for the testing of the above mentioned types of motors and fuels according to EU 88/77 regulation and later amendments, and also for the testing of Petrol, gas or Light Diesel engines tests on engine dyno.
